The  Historical Museum "Visconde de São Leopoldo" is known as "The Immigration Museum" because São Leopoldo is the birthplace of the German immigration of Rio Grande do Sul State.

It was here, at the "Imperial Feitoria do Linho-Cânhamo" that the first German immigrants arrived on 25/July/1824, brought from Germany by the Imperial Brazilian Goverment. The remarkable contribution of the German immigrants  to Rio Grande do Sul in the economy, culture, sport, leisure could not only stay on written registers. It was necessary to visualize this presence through the Museum that, in vast way, should be a culture house, a study house, a school house.

This proposal found an echo all over the whole ancient "São Leopoldo German Colony" and ten cities supported the idea. It was in this way that on 20/September/1959 the Museum was founded as a civil, cultural and non-lucrative society.

The Museum name is in honor to José Feliciano Fernandes Pinheiro, the President of São Pedro Province of Rio Grande, who conducted the immigrants to "Feitoria do Linho" and founded São Leopoldo City. By his interest in immigration he received the title of "Visconde de São Leopoldo".

The Museum patrimony is compound by dishes, using objects, tools, guns, musical instruments, clocks, clothing, furniture, clubs flags, medals, school things. In the file and library we can find documents, pictures, books and newspapers.

Fundado em 20/09/1959, o Museu inaugurou a primeira etapa de sua nova sede em 25/07/1985.


Vista interna do Museu. À esquerda, a liteira da Viscondesa de São Leopoldo; à direita, réplica da estátua de Sankt Leopoldo (Viena/Áustria) - São Leopoldo, padroeiro da Imperatriz Leopoldina, dele vem o nome da cidade berço da imigração alemã. Ao fundo, púlpito em cedro esculpido por dois imigrantes artesãos e que pertencia à Igreja Matriz de São Leopoldo.
